In China, three sycamores were planted during the Tang Dynasty to represent the seat positions of the three princes (Taishi, Taifu, and Taibao), who were high-ranking officials in the imperial court, and ever since, they have been regarded as symbols of authority and career advancement. It was brought to Japan as a medicinal tree around the time when Buddhism was introduced, and as the character ``Kogo'' indicates, it is an auspicious tree that was carved into masks and placed at demon gates to ward off evil spirits. Later, the word ``enju'' was applied to the tree, and it has been prized as a ``tree that brings happiness'' and is said to be blessed with longevity and safe childbirth. The wood is hard and durable, and the beautiful, heavy grain gives it a unique look. Since ancient times, it has been used as a precious high-grade wood for decoration of temples and shrines and for traditional crafts.
