[Product introduction]
1/48 scale plastic model.
The Type 3 Fighter Hien was the only liquid-cooled fighter among the Japanese fighters that played an active role in the Pacific War.
As a result of thorough efforts to reduce resistance and weight, it was completed as a well-balanced aircraft that could maximize both speed and maneuverability, as the term "medium war" suggests.
It was officially adopted in 1943, but its weak points were the poor production due to the lack of basic industrial power and the malfunction of the Ha-40 liquid-cooled engine due to inexperienced maintenance.
Nevertheless, it was active in the Philippines, New Guinea, and in the air defense of the mainland.
Particularly in the air defense of the mainland, parts were properly supplied, and a high operating rate was maintained thanks to the work of veteran maintenance staff.
In addition, because it had better high-altitude performance than other Japanese aircraft, it fought hard against the B-29.
In particular, the 244th Air Squadron, led by the youngest squadron commander in the history of the army, Captain Teruhiko Kobayashi, showed fierce fighting, shooting down more than 160 B-29s by the end of the war, boasting the best unit results.
The Type 1 Hei was a model that replaced the Type B's main wing armament with a 20mm cannon.
At the time, Japan did not have a 20mm cannon that could be used in actual combat, so the German MG151/20 was installed.
A total of 388 Type C aircraft were produced, including modified versions of the Type A and Type B, as well as new aircraft.
